He is Come
About the song.
In the fall of 2015 my mind became preoccupied with how to use the “spare time” that was inevitably going to exist in my life. The end of graduate school was looming ahead and I was sort of at a loss for how to continue to progress. With prayer and pondering, inspiration came - small and simple; a desire to write and perform a song by Christmas helped me put my high falutin’ college education to good use and helped me realize I had the foundational knowledge necessary to compose something lovely.
He is Come portrays three different groups of people and their perspectives as the Savior enters their lives physically and/or spiritually.
The shepherds rejoice that, “He IS come,” as angels declare unto them the birth of the Messiah; the Nephites joyfully proclaim, ”He HAS come,” as they see Jesus descend from heaven following a period of destruction; latter-day disciples hopefully testify that, “He WILL come,” as anti-Christ philosophies grow in popularity.
The chorus text, “to save us all of worth,” originally, was written to say, “to save us all, His worth” (it was also performed a few times with this verbiage). Grammatically, the former makes sense, and I am grateful for the opportunity to realize that composing is always a line upon line, precept upon precept effort. We are of so much worth to the Savior and that is WHY he came to earth, to save us.
